Review of Hedge Fund Investor Directory by Capital Hedge

Investor Directory

Review of Investor Directory Solution

Review of Hedge Fund Investor Directory by Capital HedgeBelow please find a review and overview of Capital Hedge's investor directory solution. My background is in third party marketing and capital raising so having used similar products as this in the past I'm always interested to see what these types of firms are now offering. Here is a run down of the Capital Hedge investor directory solution:
  • Capital Hedge investor profiles contain highly detailed information such as: Investor type, preferred AUM, preferred track record, investor AUM, mandates, what current strategies they are currently interested in allocating to, and detailed profile information (usually 12-15 bullet points) – as well as standard info (phone, primary contact, email, address, AUM)
  • Over 8,000 profiled investors included (compared to 2,000 or so with other database or directory options)
  • Data is constantly updated and growing to ensure clean and accurate information
  • CRM tools built within the platform to make the asset raising process more efficient such as: note saving tools on our prospects, ability to implement list management allowing you to create list of prospects, prospect ranking features, calendar function that tracks the last date and time of contact etc
  • 100% web accessible via username and password
  • Current clients include: hedge fund managers, FOF’s, third party marketers, real estate funds, and private equity groups.
  • Platform includes every type of hedge fund investor, here are a few: family offices, endowments, foundations, US wealth advisors, NON us wealth advisors, tax exempt groups, government groups, insurance groups etc etc . . . . . . .
The Capital Hedge solution is structured so that someone could use their platform as their CRM tool or they can choose import contact into something such as Act or Salesforce.com. I have always preferred to have one source of CRM management and recent updates of Act seem worthless so i would go the Salesforce.com route if you are looking at starting a new marketing campaign.

I hope the above review of the Capital Hedge solution is helpful - while access to this information is not free of charge it is designed to help those hedge funds who would like to work a bit more efficiently and shrink down their allocation cycle. In the spirit of full disclosure the above review, while completely accurate to my knowledge was done as part of a promotion, Capital Hedge supports HedgeFundBlogger.com, please support them in return. Their website is online at http://www.CapitalHedge.net

Hedge Fund Operational Due Diligence Question List

Due Diligence Questions

Hedge Fund Due Diligence Questions

Hedge Fund Operational Due Diligence Question ListBelow please find a list of of questions which may be asked during an on site due diligence visit by a consultant or fund of fund. We have just added this list to our Hedge Fund Due Diligence Tool.

a) Verify the business location is as stated in the legal documents.
b) Meet all of the principals, PMs, analyst, operational staff, etc.
c) Verify all internal groups operate accordingly. (technology, accounting, operations, trading, risk, research etc.). Walk through the entire trade process: Trade generation, execution and processing, reconciliation, accounting, database and systems administration etc.
d) Verify the Disaster Recovery site is operational and working. (When was it last tested? How often does the manager use it? Does the manager have a DR plan? If so get a copy of it, how was the manager affected by key events, such as 9/11 and the 8/14/2003 blackout, other business continuity planning, etc.)
f) Does the manager have a non-investment group that provides control oversight in an open and transparent manner?
g) Verify that the working relationships with service providers are fluid and work under stress.
h) Verify that other investors are also sophisticated investors. (you will certainly feel more comfortable if other investors have preformed their OPDD)
i) Develop an overall assessment of the team and infrastructure
j) Does the compliance environment include documented policies and procedures for all relevant areas (soft dollar, personal trading, trade allocations, etc)? (Ask for a copy of the compliance manual.)
k) Verify cash controls and movements.
l) Develop a list of likes and dislikes.
m) Portfolio administration: Does the manager use Advent, Advisorware or some other recognized software application, or are they using Excel? The software used is critical because robust software can reduce fail points and errors.
n) Does the manager rely on service providers for NAV accounting?
o) Does the manager have an independent set of books and records reconciled to the prime broker?
You should ask to see redacted key trades – let’s say the fund discusses a drawdown of 7% in February and a 21% peak in March you want to verify those trades actually occurred internally and with the Prime broker and the fund administrator.
p) Does the manager plan on trading new instruments?
q) Is the manager experiencing employee turnover?
r) Is the manager planning on making any material changes to management, administration, the strategy or key personnel?
s) Is the manager or any key personnel the subject of any governmental or regulatory investigation?
t) Does the manager have an experienced non-investment leadership providing oversight of internal processes and service providers?
u) Does the manager have a consistent and well – documented valuation and pricing process, if so ask for a copy.
v) Does the manager have an external administrator providing full service support including daily trade capture and reconciliation to prime broker?
w) Does the manager have a dedicated operational team with well defined procedures and processes?
x) Are cash movements and account openings authorized by a single signature?
y) Is the back office subject to key man risk due to being understaffed?
z) Verify the accuracy of the historical data (compare it to cleansed data – I’ve seen a PM show a profitable trade but when I took a closer look at the data it was not remotely close to what the market actually traded on the date in question.)
aa) Verify that the firm has followed its Business Plan.
bb) Does the manager provide annually audited finical statements for the considered funds?

After 2 years of active use by a dedicated following of hedge fund managers and investors, the landscape had changed in the software development arena. Hedge Fund Redemptions Explained

Redemption Reasons

Hedge Fund Redemptions Explained

Hedge Fund Redemptions ExplainedMany hedge funds have lost a significant percentage of their assets over the last 9-18 months. This mainly due to the following reasons:
  1. Overall negative performance in the industry, or negative performance within any investment class for that matter normally leads to additional redemptions.
  2. Many investors who have lost much less with their hedge fund investments than other investments are now using hedge funds as ATMs - withdrawing their investments to gain access to the much needed cash.
  3. More organizations are allocating 20-40% of their portfolios to cash overall, pulling out funds from all of their investments to meet this new higher strategic allocation.
  4. The uncovering of fraud cases on a monthly basis now within the industry is slightly lowering the level of trust within the industry and possibly slowing down further re-investments.
Below please find a recent article by the WSJ on reasons why investors have pulled their assets from hedge funds over the last 18 months:
________
Almost 9 out of 10 of them predict a “very difficult year” for their industry, according to a new survey by the accounting and audit firm Rothstein Kass. And while many hedge funds beat the stock market last year (at least by not falling as much)—and are besting it again this year—they have lost a lot of investors (and their money), and the exodus continues.

The present gloominess contrasts with the upbeat attitudes of the past two years, even as hedge funds headed from the subprime-centric meltdown of 2007 into the broader, harsher storm of 2008.

Rothstein conducted this year’s survey in January, interviewing more than 220 senior hedge-fund executives managing at least $100 million and in many cases more than $500 million in assets apiece. So their answers freshly reflect the frayed nerves of the post-Madoff period and the uncertainty of a new year and a downward-sliding economy.

“The theory that hedge funds could generate strong returns independent of market conditions was put to rest in the last four months of 2008,” says Howard Altman, head of Rothstein’s financial-services practice and co-managing principal of the firm. That factor alone rocked an industry that for years broadly marketed itself as “absolute return,” meaning it billed itself as able to post profits no matter how the markets and economy fared. source

SEC Investigations

SEC Investigations of Hedge Funds

Alex Akesson just sent me a note about a change in SEC investigation procedures for the next few years. In the future the SEC will be taking a number of steps to prevent further cases of fraud within the investment industry. One of these steps will be verifying directly with investors that they are receiving the same marketing materials and monthly statements that are being shown to SEC officials during investigations. Here is an excerpt on this article by Alex:
___________________
At the MFA Legal, Compliance and Operations Seminar in New York last week, SEC staff described its examination and enforcement priorities for the foreseeable future with respect to hedge funds and investment advisers.

According to a letter obtained by HedgeCo, the SEC staff said that as part of their examination of hedge funds and investment advisers, the SEC intends to contact investors, verifying that the hedge fund/investment manager is providing the same statement information to both the client and SEC staff. source

Resource #1: (3.10.09) An investment adviser with offices in Rhode Island and New York created a bogus billion-dollar client to inflate her firm’s assets under management while trying to lure investors, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said in a lawsuit.

Locke Capital Management Inc. owner Leila Jenkins, 54, repeatedly lied in marketing materials and regulatory filings since 2003, attracting two overseas banks as clients in 2007, the SEC said in a complaint at federal court in Providence, Rhode Island today.
