Small Hedge Funds Hit Hard by Insider Trading Probe

The hedge fund industry certainly took a hit from the insider trading probe but the investigation seems to have hurt small hedge funds the most. The investigation which centered around expert networks and technology firms has taken a toll on several small funds that have had to close shop since the insider trading probe.
Steven T. Glass, the founder of STG, which once had more than $200 million under management, notified investors last week he was shutting down his fund, said one investor familiar with the situation, who declined to be identified.

STG is the second New York hedge fund to shut down in the wake of a series of arrests of people associated with Primary Global Research, a California-based expert network firm that matches hedge funds with industry consultants.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday that Barai Capital Management, a small $80 million hedge fund raided by federal agents in November, is also closing.

Four people familiar with the investigation said both STG and Barai regularly employed Primary Global consultants to gather information on tech stocks. Source

Hedge Funds Getting Back to the Basics in 2011

Hedge funds are getting back to the fundamentals that made the industry so successful after a year of shaky markets and mixed returns.  According to several hedge fund managers in a recent Financial Times article, hedge funds are looking to 2011 as a year to get back to the basics of hedge fund trading to generate returns.
According to Chicago-based Hedge Fund Research, the average relative value-focused, or arbitrage, hedge fund manager returned 11.73 per cent last year, with only one down month. The average equity hedge fund manager returned 10.58 per cent but lost money in four months.
The figures are more telling if the fourth quarter equity rally sparked by the Federal Reserve’s second bout of “quantitative easing” – a rising tide that lifted all boats – is excluded. In the first nine months of 2010, the average equity hedge fund returned 3.56 per cent compared with 8.17 per cent for the average relative value fund.
But this year seems to continue a trend started in the final quarter. Equity long/short managers have been among the biggest gainers in January. By the middle of last month, several big-name funds were outperforming significantly, according to investors.  Source

Hedge Funds Appeal Dismissal of Porsche Law Suit

Several hedge funds have decided to appeal last year's decision by a court to dismiss their case against Porsche. The group of hedge funds are led by Elliott Associates and Black Diamond Offshore Ltd in a $2 billion suit alleging that the German carmaker deceived the market about its plans to buy Volkswagen.

The hedge funds filed notices of their appeal in Manhattan federal court late on Friday.
The hedge funds had claimed the Stuttgart-based carmaker deliberately deceived the market as to its intentions to acquire Volkswagen, publicly denying plans to take over the company while quietly buying nearly all the freely traded ordinary shares of Volkswagen.
When Porsche revealed its holdings in October 2008, shares of VW soared, triggering losses at the hedge funds, which had bet on a decline in VW shares.

Bearish Hedge Funds Suffer as Price of Oil Climbs

Hedge funds managers that were bearish on oil are now kicking themselves as the price of oil climbs. Last week, hedge funds cut back bullish oil bets by the most in two months. Then, the anti-government protests in Egypt made the price of oil spike by the most since 2009.
The funds and other large speculators reduced net-long positions, or wagers on rising oil prices, by 18 percent in the seven days ended Jan. 25, according to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s weekly Commitments of Traders report. That turned into a losing bet as prices surged at the end of the week.

Oil jumped 4.3 percent Jan. 28, erasing the week’s losses, as protesters called for the end of the 30-year rule of President Hosni Mubarak, sparking speculation of more turmoil in the region. The volume of oil futures soared to a record in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Shares in the $1.8 billion U.S. Oil Fund, the largest exchange-traded fund in the fuel, hit an eight-month high.

“The people who were selling earlier in the week obviously lost,” said Michael Lynch, president of Strategic Energy & Economic Research in Winchester, Massachusetts. “There are a lot of black swan moments that send the market jumping one way or the other very suddenly, wiping out any gains.” Source

Hedge Funds Rebut Gary Cohn's Comments on Regulation

An executive at Goldman Sachs has issued a grave warning against new regulation on banks, arguing that such action could precipitate the next financial crisis by moving risky trading to hedge funds. Gary Cohn made the comments at Davos and has since been met with a firm rebuke from the hedge fund industry, with several managers weighing in on the comments.
Mr Cohn’s speech has since drawn criticism from some of the hedge fund industry’s most well-known names – including clients of the investment bank – which have interpreted his remarks as an attack on their activities.

“These statements are just false. Hedge funds are regulated. We didn’t cause the financial crisis. We didn’t take bail-out money,” Richard Baker, the president and chief executive of the Managed Funds Association, the industry’s main trade association, told the Financial Times.

“The most recent financial crisis was caused by institutions that didn’t know how to adequately manage risk and were overleveraged. And I worry that if there is another crisis, it will be because the same institutions have failed to learn from the mistakes of the past,” he added.  Source

Curtis Freeze Hedge Fund

Curtis Freeze Hedge Fund

Curtis Freeze's Hedge Fund Posted 210% Return in 2010

Curtis Freeze's Japanese Shareholders' Consensus hedge fund produced very impressive returns in 2010, but only after a terrible 2009. The Japanese Shareholders' Consensus hedge fund returned an amazing 210% last year after falling 82% in 2009. The fund had the second best returns of all hedge funds last year, a remarkable comeback for Curtis Freeze.
The Shareholders' Consensus Fund, with assets of $15 million, trounced the average Japan hedge fund's 8.3 percent return and notched the second-best return of all hedge funds worldwide last year, according to Eurekahedge, a Singapore-based researcher that tracks 6,734 funds.
The top performer was Precision FX, a currency fund that returned 221 percent. Freeze hopes his success in 2010 helps him attract $85 million in additional investments over the next 18 months. "A near-death experience" is how he describes his losses. "Having rebuilt our track record," he says, "now we're ready to start marketing again."

A native New Yorker, Freeze, 48, arrived in Japan 30 years ago as a Mormon missionary. He began his investment career at Nikko Securities (now Nikko Cordial Securities) in 1988, just before Japan's bubble economy burst, and worked at two other financial firms before setting up Prospect Asset Management in 1994. source

Top Canadian Hedge Fund Focuses on Technology Micro-Cap

Canada's best hedge fund manager of last year is shifting his focus to what he expects to be the new high-performer: technology micro-caps. Steven Palmer, the head of AlphaNorth Asset Management Inc. has been increasing his position in technology micro-cap stocks.
“There will be a pullback in resources this year,” predicted Steven Palmer, the president of Toronto-based AlphaNorth Asset Management Inc. “By the end of this year, resource stocks will be flat to modestly higher, but returns won’t be as good as we experienced in 2010.”

In contrast, large-cap technology stocks such as Research In Motion Ltd. are looking attractive as they “have been beating earnings estimates, trade at cheap prices, have tons of cash on their balance sheet and have been buying back stock,” said Mr. Palmer, who runs the $65-million AlphaNorth Partners hedge fund, which garnered a stellar 114-per-cent return in 2010.

He has been accumulating positions in technology micro-cap stocks with unique concepts, ranging from new ways to raise fish to language-translation software. “If you are positioned early, you can be ahead of the curve,” he said. “This is what we did with rare earths. We were positioned last summer with our biggest weightings in a couple of rare-earth names - Stans Energy Corp. and Ucore Rare Metals Inc. - and they have been star performers.” Source

Event-Driven Hedge Funds 2010

Event-Driven Hedge Funds 2010

Event-Driven Hedge Funds Gained 16% in 2010

Event-driven hedge funds had an impressive last year, according to a study done by the Hennessee Group. Flexibility was the key to the 16% gains made by hedge funds in 2010.
Last year, flexibility was the key to outperforming in hedge funds, according to a study by industry consultant Hennessee Group. In a report out today, it says that managers who keyed on moving as events seemed to dictate rather than business fundamentals or other more general themes, did best in 2010.

Such “directional” hedge fund strategies were the primary drivers of portfolio performance last year, Hennessee found. Behind event-driven managers were those that focused on distressed situations. The third-best performances were turned in by funds taking an emerging markets approach.

Directional strategies tend to use less hedging. In 2010, funds with event-driven approaches returned an average of 16.2%. Distressed managers produced returns of 14.76% while emerging markets-focused hedge funds generated 13.65% returns last year, according to the study. Source

SEC Proposes Greater Reporting from Hedge Fund Advisors

Advisers to hedge funds and private equity firms will likely have to report key information to regulators in the near future. The Securities and Exchange Commission proposed increasing the information available to the Financial Stability Oversight Council on hedge funds and private equity advisers.
Advisers to hedge funds and other private funds would have to report key information to regulators under a rule proposed by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Tuesday.

The proposal, required by the Dodd-Frank Wall Street reform law, would arm the newly formed Financial Stability Oversight Council with better information about hedge funds and other private pools of capital to ensure their trading activities do not pose a risk to the broader marketplace.

The new regulations would impose new requirements on the relatively lightly regulated private fund industry. Source

Deutsche Bank Launches Second Hedge Fund ETF

Deutsche Bank has launched its second hedge fund exchange traded fund, db x-trackers db Strategies Hedge Fund Index ETF. The fund will have the liquidity of an exchange traded fund while relying on the skills of a hedge fund manager. Both ETFs launched by Deutsche Bank are UCITS III Compliant.
“Equity long-short strategies are some of the most popular in the hedge fund universe,” said Thorsten Michalik, global head of db x-trackers.

The new ETF will invest in 17 hedge funds from 13 managers, including GLG, Marshall Wace, Duet, Pilgrim and BlackRock.

Tarun Nagpal, Deutsche Bank’s head of fund derivatives, Europe, said the “live liquidity” provided by the new ETF was a “massive revolution” in hedge fund investing.

Noting that many investors had been put off investing in hedge funds due to restrictions on withdrawing cash during the financial crisis, Mr Nagpal said: “An ETF transforms the risk (of investing in hedge funds) as an investor can sell at any time.” Source

Pension Funds Reeling After Hedge Funds Insider Trading

Although the insider trading probe has primarily affected hedge funds and to some extent the rest of the alternative assets industry, pension funds also seem to be reeling from the probe. Pension funds are reportedly debating whether or not to sell their positions and are demanding answers from hedge fund managers.
The federal insider-trading probe is being felt beyond the world of hedge funds and "expert network" firms in New York and Silicon Valley. Investors in some of the hedge funds involved are struggling to get information and decide whether to sell their positions.

The scandal hit close to home for the $10 billion School Employees Retirement System of Ohio: The pension fund is invested in two hedge funds raided as part of the investigation. Soon after the news of those raids broke in November, executives of the pension fund flew to New York to question the two firms, Level Global Investors LP and Diamondback Capital Management LLC.

A contact at Diamondback told them the fund's managers would be limited in what they could say about the investigation but offered to provide an update on the fund's portfolio. The pension executives balked. "We have to do our job. I don't want a portfolio update," one of the pension fund's investment executives, Phil Roblee, wrote to another employee in an email on Dec 6. SEI Releases Fourth Annual Survey of Institutional Investors

SEI Global Services has released its fourth annual survey of institutional investors.  The survey found that investors increasingly see transparency as one of the biggest challenges to hedge fund investing, tied with meeting performance challenges.

This survey confirms what many industry observers were arguing during the regulation debate, that greater transparency is desired by investors (almost 70%).  The report shows indicates a need for hedge fund managers to enhance their risk management infrastructure and risk reporting, and institutionalize transparency policies to attract new capital, satisfy anxious investors, and protect their reputations.
Investors have modified their expectations to combat performance challenges. In fact, meeting performance challenges tied with transparency as the greatest challenge in hedge fund investing.

Concerns about the level of disclosure have intensified. Nearly 70% of investors name a lack of transparency as their biggest worry.

Investors and consultants overwhelmingly expect hedge funds institutional business to grow.

David Tepper Seeks to Raise $15 Million to Feed Homeless

David Tepper, the hedge fund manager that became a star with his stellar performance in the last couple of years, has applied his talents to helping those less fortunate. Mr. Tepper is launching a campaign to raise $15 million to feed the homeless and needy in his home state of New Jersey. It is expected that Mr. Tepper will draw from his hedge fund friends as well as his own personal wealth to contribute to the Community Food Bank of New Jersey.
“There’s nothing more important than feeding people,” Mr. Tepper told a sizable audience gathered in the organization’s 285,000-square-foot warehouse, where walls of fresh apples, canned fruit and chili served as a backdrop. “It’s pretty simple. In 2006 and 2007, unemployment was around 4 percent. Now, we’re closer to 9 percent.”

It’s safe to say Mr. Tepper, founder of the $15 billion Appaloosa Management, has some change to spare. His $3.5 billion Thoroughbred Fund returned 22 percent last year for investors, after a 100 percent return in 2009.

He’s also encouraged other prominent hedge funds in New Jersey to contribute to the food bank, which Mr. Tepper has supported since 2006.

“It’s a very simple and direct way to fill a serious need,” said Martin Gross, founder of Sandalwood Securities, a fund of funds. “It has a charming simplicity to it from a philanthropic point of view.” Source

Hedge Fund Assets Update

Hedge Fund Assets Update

Hedge Fund Industry Assets Reach $1.917 Trillion

Hedge funds have done pretty well fundraising as of late and it is starting to show as industry assets continue to rise. The latest estimate is that hedge fund total assets now sit around $1.917 trillion. This number is only a little bit short of the 2008 peak when total assets managed was $1.93 trillion.
Hedge-fund assets grew at a record rate in the fourth quarter, Hedge Fund Research Inc. said Wednesday, as strong investment performance and new investor capital pushed industry assets to $1.917 trillion, just shy of their mid-2008 peak.

But the industry isn't entirely back to health. Only 43% of funds ended the year at the level where they can collect performance fees on gains, and HFR data show that the vast bulk of new money is going to an elite group of large hedge-fund firms.

At a briefing in London, HFR President Ken Heinz said net investor flows were $55 billion for the full year, the most since 2007. About $45 billion of the new money went to firms managing at least $5 billion in assets.

Along with a 10.5% rise in the HFRI Composite Index that tracks about 2,200 hedge funds, that swelled the industry by a record $149 billion in the quarter, putting estimated industry assets just below their peak of $1.93 trillion in the middle of 2008. Source

DE Shaw Taks $159 Million Short Position on Barclays

DE Shaw is reportedly betting against one of England's biggest banks. DE Shaw, one of the world's largest hedge funds, is said to have taken a $159 million short position on Barclays Bank, expecting that the tougher regulatory and economic situation will eventually hurt the bank.
The hedge fund, which has $21bn (£13bn) in assets under management, disclosed that it had built a 0.26pc short position. The position is worth £97m after Barclays' shares closed down 4.4 at 306.6p on Monday.

Its decision to bet on a falling share price at one of the UK's leading banks could dent confidence in the financial services sector. Investors are already worried about the effects of tougher regulations on funding costs and future profitability.

Hedge funds on both sides of the Atlantic made considerable gains by betting against banks' share prices during the financial crisis and DE Shaw's move will raise fears that some again sense an opportunity.

Testimonial #14: Steve Vennerbeck | Real Estate Investor
" I've been a professional real estate investor for more than 10 years now and am very comfortable taking risk to earn a comfortable living for myself and my family. However, the last few years I've become more and more active with the stock market. I've been actively using a long/short approach with great success (yes even during the recent downturn). I then said to myself "what if I could invest other peoples money as effectively as I've been investing my own?" I later found out that my "idea" is called a hedge fund. So for two years I've embarked upon a knowledge quest to learn everything I can about hedge funds, obtaining series 7, entity structuring etc for such a business. During this time I came across hedgefundblogger.com. What I liked about this company was that I no longer needed to learn this subject matter on my own. I had the resource of literally thousands of qualified individuals all distilled into a single site. Since joing the HFG my learning curve has turned upward dramatically. My goal for 2011 is to complete the Level 2 portion of the CHP program while simultaneously looking into entity structuring my business."

Testimonial #15: Andy R. | Hedge Fund Manager
"As a former Hedge Fund manager, looking to launch a new fund in the next year, I was intrigued by the prospect of increasing my knowledge and understanding of a variety of platforms, strategies, and new regulations that are likely to come through the CHP. I believe that this designation is a long overdue way to separate the wheat from the chaff in an industry that, while currently in a down cycle, will remain as an integral component for financial planning and asset allocation in the future."

Transcript from Video Above: "To start with my objective was to work for a hedge fund manage a portfolio of my own a few years from now. While I was trying to learn the basics of the hedge fund industry I found the certification program ran by the Hedge Fund Group (HFG). This lead me to enroll into this hedge fund certification program they provided many helpful internship and career related articles. This gave me the right exposure on the industry and eventually got me an internship with the Hedge Fund Group. During this internship I was given many responsibilities on hedge funds, due diligence they use, risk management processes they use and holdings analysis work using SEC 13F Holdings filings. I am working with the Hedge Fund Group (HFG) to help provide a platform of working with hedge fund managers further throughout the rest of my career. Thank you"

Not only is the course vigorous and up to date, but they also help you with access to industry recruiters for career advice and job opportunities. Another reason I registered was so that I could build my contacts in the investment world through the Hedge Fund Group. To me the value was in the complete package for a successful career in the field of alternative investments."

Testimonial #26: Algorithmic Trader for a Private Capital Group
"I am an algorithmic trading software developer working for a capital firm. I have been doing just-in-time learning all the time, in an undisciplined fashion. I think the goal of achieving a CHP Designation would enforce a formal approach to my education in this dynamic field. Besides, in my readings, I am hitting areas and terms I did not know, like - Tranches etc. CHP Designation would give me the confidence of a firm background knowledge, in pursuing my career."

Testimonial #27: Bob Beller Executive Vice President at a Financial Advisory Firm
"I’ve been involved in all aspects of the financial services industry over the past twenty-five years – legal and compliance, commodity pool owner and operator, hedge fund-of-funds principal and operator, domestic and international…you name it. If there’s anything I’ve learned over the years it’s that no business and no individual entrepreneur can sustain success over time without integrity and objective standards through which to measure core competence. Integrity comes from within. Objective standards are established by progressive thinkers. For me, the concept of CHP Designation is at the cutting edge of an industry that requires more uniform and measurable standards. That’s where I want to be for people I represent and that’s exactly what I want to pass along to people I mentor. Timing is everything."
