I just found an article which sums up many of the ideas I believe in while evaluating the future prospects for hedge funds in the industry.

As investors pull cash out in the face of some of the industry's worst ever performance figures and plummeting stock markets, strategies that relied on borrowing to drive returns when credit was easy will fade and funds will have to cut their lucrative fees.
