Hedge Funds Gain 2.7% in March 2010 as Stocks Rally

Hedge funds rose 2.7% in March, posting their best month since September 2009.  The impressive gains last month may quiet concerns that the industry has peaked after great returns last year.  The gains were helped by a rally in the stock markets as the S&P 500 rose 5.9% last month.  Equity hedge funds were the best performing, climbing an average 3.5% in March.
The funds have risen 2.6 percent this year, the Chicago- based researcher said today on its Web site.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index of the largest U.S. companies advanced 5.9 percent in March. Equity hedge funds were the best-performing category last month, gaining an average 3.5 percent, according to Hedge Fund Research. Relative value hedge funds were the worst performers, returning 1.1 percent, the company said.
Firms that farm client money to hedge funds increased 1.7 percent in March and 1.5 percent for the year.
Hedge funds climbed 2.8 percent in September, according to the research firm.  Source
