Russell Performance Universes (RPU) includes a standard set of measures for the universes covered, including:Universe Mean
A mean calculated by summing the returns of the portfolios in the universe and dividing by the number of portfolios. This represents the average return of all portfolios in the universe for a given time period. Quarterly mean values for multiple periods can then be chain-linked to obtain longer-term results.
Universe Mean Standard Deviation
The average annualized standard deviation of the standard deviations of universe participants for periods three years or greater.
Universe Median Return
The return of the middle observation when returns of universe portfolios are ranked in descending order for a given time period.
Universe Median Standard Deviation
The return of the middle observation when the annualized standard deviation of the universe portfolios are ranked in descending order.
