Stock Market Capitalization | Definition

The total dollar value of all outstanding shares on a market; a measure of corporate size. The market capitalization of a security is equal to the number of shares outstanding multiplied by the price per share. For example, if General Electric has 3,285,024 shares outstanding and the price per share is $60.375 on May 31, 1997, then GE's market cap is $198.3 billion as of that date. Also known as market cap.
