Operating Expensses | Accounting Definition
(1) For companies, all expenses pertaining to the normal operation of the business, with the exception of interest expenses and non-recurring losses.
(2) For mutual funds, the normal costs a fund incurs in conducting business, such as the expenses associated with maintaining offices, staff, and equipment, as well as maintaining the fund's portfolio of securities. These expenses are paid from the fund's assets before any earnings are distributed to investors.
